Take Back Your Street for health every Saturday

By Lori Pelersi

A new event is hitting the streets in Albany that promotes physical activity and fun games right on the street.

“Take Back Your Street” is part of a joint effort to remake the streets into healthy places in our community.

“’Take Back Your Street’ is creating a safe place for the community to come out and play” said Azula Kennedy, Healthy Hearts on the Hill Coordinator. The event will take place held every Saturday from June 15-August 31 on North Lake Avenue, and each week the event will offer snacks, music, games, and a free Zumba dance fitness at 2pm.

On July 20, Healthy Hearts on the Hill and its partners are also launching the “Healthy Hearts Walking Path,” a walking path from West Hill to Arbor Hill and down portions of Central Avenue. The path will be designated with signage, including motivational and historical facts about the route. The Underground Railroad Healthy Hearts Walking Path will be unveiled on September 22 with signage devoted to the area’s connection to the Underground Railroad, including information about the house of Stephen and Harriet Myers, well-known local abolitionists.

“Take Back Your Street” is a joint initiative of Healthy Hearts on the Hill and Koinonia Primary Care. Healthy Hearts on the Hill was co-founded by Koinonia Primary Care and the Center for Excellence in Aging Services in 2007, and it is made up of community members and community organizations to set up events to promote healthy living and increased access to healthcare.

Koinonia Primary Care provides the community with quality mental and primary health services for neighborhoods in the Capital District. Its initiative is to emphasize programs that will provide information about healthcare so the community can take part in healthy and whole living. Koinonia Primary Care provides healthcare resources to underserved communities to help raise awareness about healthcare.

On Saturday August 17th, Take Back Your Street will be located on Second Street and Judson Street for Carnival on the Hill. There is lots of fun for kids and adults, like art projects, games and other hands-on activities, so mark your calendar for the Carnival on the Hill event!

Take Back Your Street event is held every Saturday from June 15th to August 31st on North Lake Avenue by 553 Clinton Avenue from 12pm-4pm (rain or shine).
