Owner Raj Singh stands in front of his newly reopened business. The business has been closed since January, when a fire that started in the upstairs apartment damaged much of the building. |
Sham Candy & Grocery reopened after a fire last winter destroyed the familiar business, and the owner says he is already back in the swing of things. “Since we reopened, business has picked up a lot, and is stronger than ever,” says Raj Singh, owner of Sham Candy & Grocery.
In mid-January, a fire started by a kitchen stove in a second story apartment at 123 Central Avenue. It spread to the store, destroying the interior and exterior. The store was affected by smoke and water damage, and the apartment above was a total loss.
Singh, proprietor of Sham Candy & Grocery, has been a store owner for many years and purchased this building in 1998 to continue his passion. The convenience store offers several services including money transfer and bill paying. Among the products sold are snacks, drinks, household items, Singh is very happy to be back in business, and claims that his “primary concern is the convenience of the customer.”
