Central Avenue dressed in blue -- how 'bout you?

This month, you'll find business windows up and down Central Avenue dressed in blue to raise awareness about colon cancer.

Colorectal cancer is common and treatable if caught early. The trouble is that most at risk populations don't get regularly screened to identify and treat it.

Central Avenue's blue campaign is part of Albany Cancer Service's Main Streets Go Blue campaign, where city's main streets are transformed into visual reminders about getting regular check-ups.

Participating businesses like DePaula Chevrolet, Armory Automotive, Best Fitness, Westgate Diner, Security Supply Plumbing and Heating, GreatFinds, and Colvin Wine Merchants are reaching out to their customers -- and that makes a difference.

"It's important because they are seeing folks every day who may not have insurance," says Christie Ray-Marchetti, Outreach for Albany Cancer Services. "By participating and sharing information, they really are saving lives."

Albany Cancer Services is providing free cancer screening for uninsured men and women over the age of 50. For more information, or to make an appointment, click here.

Free screenings will also be available at Best Fitness in Westgate Plaza on March 12 from 4-6pm.
