Women in Words with Author and Advocate Darby PenneyThursday, October 6th @ 6:30-8pm Presentation and discussion by author and advocate Darby Penney on creative writing as a tool for social change. In 1998, she and her colleagues began to document the lives of women and men whose suitcases were discovered in an abandoned state hospital attic. The project resulted in a large exhibit at the New York State Museum, a website (www.suitcaseexhibit.org), a traveling exhibit, and a book, The Lives They Left Behind: Suitcases from a State Hospital Attic. Focusing on the life stories of six women who were committed to Willard State Hospital between 1899 and 1940, Darby will discuss the power of art to touch the heart and change attitudes in ways that fact-based advocacy often does not.
This project is made possible in part through a Community Art$Grant, a program funded by the Arts Center of the Capital Region through the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
