Two local businesses are assisting with Hurricane Sandy relief efforts by collecting and trucking in donations to areas hardest hit by last week's storm.
Rachel Dott, co-owner of Coccadotts Cake Shop on Central Avenue spent Monday and Tuesday collecting coats, water, food, and winter gear at her bakery to distribute today in Rockaway. The cupcake truck was packed to the roof with donations from supporters, and set off this morning with high hopes. Dott says when she saw the devastation on T.V., she just had to help.
"I'm the type of person where I just have to do something myself," she says. "A lot of people joke with me, and say, 'You're not Mother Teresa,' but I just have to do something."
Phillips Hardware is also soliciting donations from the public for an upcoming trip to Breezy Point Disaster Relief on Staten Island. The hardware store is working with the Pine Bush Little League collecting goods at their stores to bring to this beach community, where fires ravaged 111 homes. Among other items they are looking for are cleaning supplies, water, garbage bags, diapers, blankets, dust masks, OTC medicine, and drinking water.
Please join the efforts to help our fellow New Yorkers recover from this devastating storm.
Supplies and donations can be brought to any of these hardware stores, now through Friday, November 9:
