Whacking weeds: Keeping Central beautiful a full-time job

Moss doesn't grow under our feet on Central Avenue. And neither do weeds, thanks to a hard working crew at Hoffman Landscape & Design.

The Central Avenue Business Improvement District contracts with Hoffman's to provide landscape maintenance throughout the district. This year marks the third straight year Hoffman's has been caring for Albany's busiest street, and they are pros.

Each morning five workmen saddle up, hitting the street in bright yellow vests by 8am to get as much work done as they can before the summer heat sets in. They remove weeds from Lark Street to the City Line. The workmen are responsible for trimming all the weeds that grow up in between sidewalk cracks and curbs, maintaining landscaping in sidewalk tree beds, and also seeing to the medians along Everett Road.

It's a big job--covering the entire 3.5 mile district and side streets takes approximately five days! That means that as soon as they are done at one end, they start over at the other end.

The Central Avenue Business Improvement District is also responsible for the district's landscaping program, including installing and watering 200+ hanging flower baskets. They also pays for and maintain the large garden beds at each of the district's main entrances: Everett Road, the City Line, and Townsend Park. And don't forget about the sidewalk cleaning and maintenance program. BID workers are out six days a week sweeping, vacuuming, and cleaning Central Avenue's streets, sidewalks and bus stops. Phew!

Keep your eyes peeled for these urban gardeners! Thanks for keeping Central Avenue looking good!
