"I Am": Equinox photo exhibit puts lives of youth on display
What does it feel like to be a teenager in Albany's inner-city? “I Am…”: Youth Self-Reflection exhibit could shed some light on that question.
The upcoming photography exhibit, a partnership between Equinox's New Pathways program and the Times Union, handed out cameras to youth ages 17 to 22 and asked them to express their identity in pictures
and in words. The youth produced a series of powerful images, and they are certain to provoke serious thought and discussion about life on Albany's inner-city streets.
The project is based on PhotoVoice, a methodology developed by a pair of women in Edinburgh in 1998, who hoped to create opportunities for marginalized communities to find a new means of self-expression and advocacy. Today, PhotoVoice is an established charity and has run 50 projects in 23 countries including Vietnam and India.
The photos will be on exhibit June 1 from 5:30-8:30 at Equinox, 95 Central Avenue, 2nd Floor.
