Central Avenue is a street of Nations and DestiNations. To continue to build the area’s identity as a dining, shopping, and cultural destination, the Central Avenue Business Improvement District has designed, purchased, and installed 244 banners and 70 international flags on Central Avenue this week.
The first phase of the project was completed this weekend, when 70 international flags were installed on the Avenue between Robin and Ontario. The flags, along with 35 banners will be part of Central Avenue’s “Cultural Village,” a unique stretch of Central Avenue between Robin and Ontario that’s become known for its international cuisine and multicultural retail, religious, and social opportunities.
The three mile stretch of the Central Avenue Business Improvement District is home to 74 restaurants and eateries, representing 18 different nation and includes West African, Indian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Caribbean and Asian grocery stores. The Central Avenue business district is also home to a large foreign born population, including immigrants from Central America, Africa, Eastern Europe, India and Pakistan, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and the Caribbean. Many of these individuals have gone on to build successful businesses right on Central Avenue. We celebrate their pioneering spirit, and the diversity they bring to this great city.
The remainder of the 244 banners will go up Friday, May 18 and Saturday, May 19.
As part of the banner project, Central Avenue has been divided into five distinct semi-districts. They are: Townsend Park, The Main Street District, The Cultural Village, The Avenue, and The Shopping District. Each semi-district features unique decorations that showcase its individual character, including customized banners, angle flags, international flags, and flower baskets.
