In March, the city passed an ordinance that requires businesses and restaurants with live entertainment have a cabaret license on file with the city. This law went into effect April 19, 2012.
The law impacts any business offering a live band or music with amplification, a disc jockey (DJ), karaoke, or live dance. Businesses are required to apply for a cabaret license to offer these types of entertainment at their establishment.
Businesses can apply for a temporary license if they will only have entertainment twice; otherwise, they are required to apply for an annual license. Businesses must submit an application to the city clerk's office along with fee, which ranges from $50.00 to $500.00 depending on occupancy and whether liquor will be served. Businesses must also supply a certificate of occupancy and liquor license.
Not-for-profits must submit documentation of their status as Not-for-Profits with their application.
Applications will be reviewed, and licenses issued on a revolving basis. Licenses are good for one year, and then they have to be renewed.
If you have any questions about the cabaret license application, you may contact the Nala Woodard, City Clerk, City Hall, Room 202 at (518) 434-5090.
