"If I only had a heart..." Scarecrows lend whimsy to district

Nothing says autumn like a scarecrow. These lovable straw-filled fellows announce the arrival of cooler weather and the oncoming harvest. This year, the Central Business Improvement District celebrates these whimsical companions with their second-annual Scarecrow Contest.

“The scarecrows are a Real Life Social Marketing and a quality of life idea,” says Anthony Capece, Jr. Executive Director for the Central Business Improvement District. “It just takes something so simple and fun for just about anyone and brings it to life. It’s also a great promotional way to let people know about a cause or an organization.”

District members and city residents at large are encouraged to construct a scarecrow to display at the contest, which will take place from October 22 through October 29. Entries are due by October 5.

Submissions can be made in six categories: Traditional, Business or Brand [advertising your business], Fantasy [celebrating your favorite character from a movie or storybook], Diversity [celebrating the great cultural diversity of Albany], Go Green [which promotes the environment] and Movie or YouTube [which allows budding or accomplished moviemakers to let their creative juices flow].

First prize winners will be awarded $500, second place winners $300 and third place winners $100. Fourth and fifth prize winners will enjoy a pizza party. Voting will take place online and Prizes will be awarded November 1.

Scarecrows will be on display throughout the district. “It should really spruce up the areas for the fall...and that’s good for business,” says Capece.
