Waste Cooking Oil —
Problem or Opportunity?
January 17, 2013  u  1:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m.

Do you own or operate a restaurant where waste cooking oil is generated and
operate diesel delivery vehicles? Work in the waste disposal industry? Are you in
local/regional/state departments of transportation and environmental services?
Then you understand — waste cooking oil can be a real problem! It clogs sink
drains and sewers, can quickly ruin septic tanks, and pollutes the environment if
dumped in landfills.

What can you do? Convert waste cooking oil to biodiesel, a vegetable oil — or
animal fat-based fuel that can be used as a diesel blend. Too costly? Not really!
There are compelling economic and environmental reasons for starting a
community biodiesel program in your area!

Learn more about the process by attending a special biodiesel workshop at
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on January 17, 2013. New York State Pollution
Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) will explain how to save money, reduce greenhouse
gas emissions, and create a reliable outlet for used cooking oil and grease. Hear
about Monroe County’s EcoPark, a resource recovery facility where waste cooking
oil is collected and processed into biodiesel to run service vehicles and maintenance
equipment, such as lawnmowers.

Topics presented at the workshop include:
Biodiesel basics
Potential environmental and economic benefits
Waste oil collection program at Monroe County EcoPark
Selecting and purchasing equipment
Site selection and facilities/materials/equipment required
Biodiesel conversion process steps
Use options for biodiesel by-product

The session is free, but registration is required. Reserve your
spot by calling (585) 475–2512 by January 8, 2013.

Location: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Center for
Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies (building 74)*
