The second annual Orlo Goes Global hair show promises to be a very in-"tress"-ting. Last week's sneak preview at the Orlo School of Hair Design and Cosmetology provided much to gush over, including crowns of braids, liberty spikes, downy white wigs streaked with blue, towering Geisha hair, and manes inspired by the Serengeti plains. Orlo students practiced the looks they will be creating for this Thursday's big hair show.
The students will work with alumni to create around 50 different looks inspired by the seven continents. They are working with everything from feathers to hats made of hair, and there is simply no end to their creativity. Karyn Riggione, Instructor and Career Development Coach for Orlo School, says last year's judges praised the students daring and talent, noting that their looks rivaled hair seen at the world's biggest shows. "It's super duper avant garde," says Riggione.
This year, music is provided by DJ Trumastr, one of the Capital Region's hottest DJs. Hors'd'ouevres and cash bar will add to the party atmosphere. The big event will take place at the Linda, WAMC's Performing Arts Studio. Last year, crowds lined up down the street to get into the event, but seating at the school was limited, so the staff decided to move the event to a larger venue this year.
This charity event will raise funds for local hurricane and flood relief. Last year, funds were donated to Olivia Oketch, a Kenyan woman who dreamed of opening her own salon in Kibera, one of Africa's largest slums. She now owns her own thriving business, which she calls "The Orlo Hairstylers and Beauty Boutique."
"We really are global," says Riggione.
Orlo Goes Global, A Hair Show, will take place, Thursday November 10, at 7pm at the Linda, 339 Central Avenue, Albany, NY. Doors open at 7pm, show begins at 7:30. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the door. For more information, call the Orlo 459-7832.
